MCLE Requirements

Effective January 1, 2010, the New Jersey Supreme Court has mandated continuing legal education for all New Jersey attorneys. This CLE requirement is the satisfactory completion of 24 credit hours of continuing legal education every two years including at least 4 credits in ethics and/or professionalism. For newly admitted attorneys in New Jersey, the first two years must include 15 of the required 24 credit hours in five of nine specific subject areas. Lawyers must maintain records of CLE attendance for three years from the date of attendance. The Board on continuing legal education may audit attorneys’ compliance with the CLE requirements. Certificates of Compliance are required. Attorneys who do not comply with their CLE obligation may be administratively suspended from the practice of law in New Jersey.
